Build Great Fires

How To Build A Great Fire
Keep the two logs together, near enough to keep each other warm and far enough apart - about a finger's breadth - for breathing room.

Good fire, good marriage, same rule.

Step By Step...
Technique counts!

  1. Always leave some ash in the fireplace since it creates heat that reflects back into the fire. Some folks like to clean the ashes out after every fire--don't be so tidy, you're working against a great fire.
  2. Place an average-sized log on the back of the grate with three smaller chunks (or other fire-starter) along side.
  3. Place another average-sized log in front being sure to leave plenty of space between the two logs, giving your fire plenty of oxygen. Now create an "H" pattern of logs. If your fireplace has enough head space add an extra one across the top which will help reflect the heat back into the fire to get it started and keep it burning hot.
  4. A couple of crumpled pieces of newspapers or cardboard underneath and you're all set. Simply light the paper, sit back and enjoy the ambiance. The starter-wood will catch and give you enough blaze to get the whole fire going.
  5. Your fire should burn for a good 45 minutes or so, depending on your fireplace, before you'll need to throw more logs on.

TIPS: Don't be afraid to poke the fire once every now-and-again to create a little air between the logs stoking the fire up. Also enjoy throwing smaller pieces of kindling in once in a while as the fire burns down...it is a great way to get it blazing again.

Oh, and of course, don't forget to open the damper in the chimney before you get started, unless you're hoping for a smokey atmosphere. It happens...we've all done it!
